Modified Social Bench for Venice #04

Challenging the conventional idea of a bench, Modified Social Bench for Venice #04 transforms a place to sit into an invitation to move, connect, and play.
Part of Jeppe Hein’s ongoing Modified Social Bench series, this sculptural seating element bends and curves in unexpected ways, disrupting the predictable form of a traditional bench. The altered geometry encourages visitors to reconsider how they position their bodies in public space.
Rather than dictating a single way to sit, the work promotes multiple modes of interaction - leaning, balancing, reclining, or gathering together. Its design naturally sparks conversation among strangers and redefines the bench as both artwork and social catalyst.
Installed within The Underline’s active pedestrian corridor, the piece aligns with the park’s mission to integrate art, movement, and community life. By reshaping a familiar object, Hein invites visitors to experience public space with curiosity and openness.
