Water Tables

Blurring the line between sculpture and infrastructure, Water / Tables transforms a place to sit into a place to consider Miami’s evolving environmental reality.
Water / Tables is both a functional gathering space and a conceptual artwork that reflects Miami’s deep connection to water—its presence, absence, and uncertainty. The sculptural forms resemble shifting landmasses or reservoirs, inviting visitors to sit, meet, and inhabit the work rather than simply observe it.
Despain’s practice often considers how environmental forces shape cultural behavior. In Miami, where rising sea levels and porous limestone ground make water an ever-present concern, the work becomes a quiet prompt to reflect on resilience, adaptation, and shared responsibility.
By integrating art directly into spaces of rest and conversation, Water / Tables aligns with The Underline’s vision of creating infrastructure that fosters community, dialogue, and environmental awareness simultaneously.
