This summer, The Underline’s third cohort of the Green Leaders Apprenticeship Program blossomed—literally and figuratively. This workforce development program gives Miami-Dade College students hands-on horticulture training, preparing them to become the next generation of environmental stewards.

Over the course of the summer, our 2025 "Greenies” went from native garden novices to confident caretakers of Miami’s green corridor. Working side-by-side with The Underline’s horticulture team, they learned the art and science of nurturing native plants, maintaining pollinator-friendly landscapes, and understanding the ecological role of urban green spaces.

But their learning didn’t stop at the garden gates. Field trips introduced the cohort to Miami’s leading ecological organizations, giving them a broader perspective on the interconnected work that protects our city’s environment. These experiences didn’t just build skills—they deepened a sense of purpose.

We’re proud to share that the program’s impact extends far beyond summer. This year, one Green Leader transitioned directly into a full-time gardening role with The Underline, continuing the work they began as an apprentice. Alumni from past cohorts have also joined our team or pursued careers in horticulture and environmental conservation across South Florida.

None of this would be possible without the generous support of Bank of America, The Daly Family Fund, and a grant from the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. Their investment makes it possible to train—and inspire—the next wave of green leaders in Miami.

To our 2025 Green Leaders: thank you for your dedication, your curiosity, and your hard work. You’ve helped grow not only The Underline’s gardens, but also your own roots in the field of environmental stewardship. We can’t wait to see how you’ll keep our city blooming.
