Horticulture

At The Underline, horticulture is a growing movement — one that connects people, plants, and purpose. Through climate-conscious gardens, youth leadership programs, and sustainable design, we’re turning underutilized land into ecosystems that nourish both nature and community.

Sustainability Education

Become a Climate Champ

Join The Underline’s Climate Champs initiative — a free educational program that empowers students and families to become environmental stewards in their communities. Through fun, hands-on experiences and interactive learning, participants explore topics like native plants, biodiversity, stormwater management, and climate resilience.
Whether in the classroom or along the trail, Climate Champs inspires new generations to take action, ask questions, and become part of a greener future.
Climate Champs will:
  • DISCOVER!  Get to know the nature that exists right here in our city!
  • EXPLORE!  Learn about the role we play in our environment and how we are all connected.
  • CONTRIBUTE!  Learn about the benefits of natural solutions and what you can do to help.
  • INSPIRE!  Help spread the word and tell your friends how to become Climate Champs too.

Learn How To
Recycle Right

When you recycle using one of the 22 recycling bins throughout The Underline, you’re not just keeping the park clean — you’re actively contributing to its mission of fostering sustainability and resilience. Recycling stations throughout the park make it easy for you to dispose of these materials responsibly.
Thank you to the Florida Beverage Association and the
American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy Americafor their generous support.
What can you recycle?
Recycling supports The Underline’s mission to build a greener, more resilient Miami. Every item you recycle helps conserve resources, cut emissions, and reduce waste. Here's how:
  • Paper Products & Cardboard
Recycling paper and cardboard helps save trees, reduce water use, and cut carbon emissions. It also keeps packaging materials in a sustainable loop by giving them new life.
  • Aluminum Food and Beverage Cans
Aluminum is 100% recyclable and retains its quality through every cycle. By recycling cans, you save up to 95% of the energy it takes to produce new ones and help reduce environmental pollution.
  • Juice & Milk Cartons
Lightweight and sustainable, these cartons can be turned into paper products or even roofing tiles. Recycling them reduces landfill waste and limits the need for new raw materials.
  • Plastic Bottles
Recycled plastic bottles can become clothing, furniture, or playground equipment. This reduces plastic pollution and supports a circular system where materials stay in use longer.
  • Glass Bottles
Glass is endlessly recyclable without losing purity. Each recycled glass bottle saves energy and emissions, and can be used to make new containers, tiles, and more.
What can’t be placedin the recycling bin?
While recycling helps build a more sustainable future, not all materials belong in the recycling bin. Understanding what can’t be recycled helps prevent contamination and keeps recycling systems efficient. Here are common items to keep out of the bin — and what to do instead.
  • Plastic Bags
They can jam recycling equipment and are often not accepted in curbside bins. Take them to store drop-off points or reuse them at home.
  • Foam or Plastic Take-Out Boxes
Styrofoam and some plastic containers are hard to recycle and often end up in landfills. Choose reusable or compostable options instead.
  • Plastic Hangers
Most hangers are made from mixed materials, making them unrecyclable. Donate or creatively repurpose them at home.
  • Batteries
Contain harmful chemicals and must be handled separately. Use drop-off locations or battery-specific bins.
  • Other Items to Avoid
Greasy pizza boxes, snack wrappers, disposable utensils, and wax-coated paper are common contaminants in recycling bins.
What to Do Instead
  • Repurpose
Give non-recyclables a second life through DIY or creative reuse.
  • Dispose Responsibly
Drop off batteries, e-waste, and other hazardous items at approved centers.
  • Support Sustainable Alternatives
Opt for reusable or compostable products whenever possible.
At The Underline, we’re committed to helping our community make smarter waste choices. By staying informed and acting responsibly, we can all reduce our environmental impact. Have questions about disposal? Check our resources or connect with a team member for guidance.
What about chemicals?
Improper disposal of household chemicals can harm our environment and health. Items like paints, cleaners, and pesticides don’t belong in regular trash or recycling. The ChemAgain Program offers a safer alternative — giving new life to unused products and keeping our community safe.
Why Use the ChemAgain Program?
  • Reduce Waste
Prevent perfectly good chemical products from ending up in landfills or being improperly disposed of.
  • Protect the Environment
Avoid contamination of soil and water sources by ensuring chemicals are handled safely.
  • Save Money
Access new or nearly new chemical products for your home, garden, or DIY projects at no cost.
How to Participate
  • Drop Off Unused Chemicals
Take your unwanted or excess chemicals to any participatingHome Chemical Collection Center. Check the county’s website for locations and accepted items.
  • Browse for Reuse
Visit a collection center to see what’s available for reuse. You might find paint, cleaning supplies, or other products you can put to good use.
  • Spread the Word
Encourage your neighbors and friends to use the program, reducing waste and promoting community sustainability.
The ChemAgain Program is a win-win: it helps reduce waste and supports a more sustainable future. When we choose responsible disposal, we protect our community and planet. Visit the county’s website or your nearest collection center to learn how you can get involved.
